The school summer holidays are now rapidly approaching. The private schools broke up last week & the state schools at the end of next. In laymen's terms, this means that that all roads for the next 6 weeks will lead to the coast.Quickly scanning through the caravan bookings for the season, it is interesting how most of our visitors are from, south & west Yorkshire, Derbyshire a few from Lancashire. Very few in fact from the south or west of England. Both rail & road access to the East Yorkshire coast are good, but it seems to be an area overlooked by many.
The east Yorkshire coast is the ideal spot for the good old bucket & spade holiday. We must have one of the longest beaches anywhere. The sands stretch from Bridlington in the north to Spurn Point in the south, jutting out into the Humber Estuary. All along the coast are small seaside towns, such as Withersea & Hornsea, offering the good old fashioned family holiday. Nothing too fancy just plenty of sand and a safe beach. Accommodation along the coastal area can be found in a variety of smart B & Bs to holiday parks suitable for all pockets. Some have seriously smart mobile homes, most sites come complete with swimming pools, restaurants entertainments. They want for nothing.I must say that l am so lucky to live here by the sea in Holderness. Moving north from Gloucestershire all those years[hic] ago l have been amazed at the diversity of landscape that abounds here. From the long golden beaches to the undulating Yorkshire Wolds, the white cliffs of Flamborough to the rugged landscapes of the North York Moors. There is something here for everyone.
Oh, the headless man is my mate Mr J Fisher with one of his freshly caught sea trout. He also catches sea bass, mackerel, dab, lemon sole & cucumber fish to name but a few!

What colour are cucumber fish?
The hoards have already arrived up here. It really adds to the atmosphere I have to say and takes me back to the wonderful holidays I spent up here (pre-move) with my mum & dad.
I've just read about your coffee shop experience - nightmare! Well done you for sorting it out... are you dreading the holidays now? I must say your part of the world sounds very inviting so I'm going to make a note to get up there in the future (promise not to disgrace myself in the coffee shop!).
cucumber fish are about 4 inches long with an elongated lower jaw & a mouth filled with sharp teeth being predators. they are brown in colour & smell of, well yes,cucumbers.
I found the coffee shop story unbelievable!! Haven't they heard about health and safety regulations!! Incredible. I don't imagine you will take much messing so I bet you will have told them...in a very nice way, of course!!
Your blog brings back many a happy childhood holiday to the East Coast when I lived in Hull. The North Sea is so cold. It took me years to realised that it wasn't that it always rained in Withernsea or Brid or Filey...it was just that my Nan couldn't afford 'peak' time holidays so we always went out of season!!
Hornsea (and York) of course were the places for school trips...

I too have read your post on the coffee shop - completely gob smacking - but you handled it very well. let's just hope they were having a bad day and that this is not their normal way of behaving.
Roads clogged up here - loads of cravans although the Village is very quiet - maybe the weather is putting them off . . . it is very chilly up here tonight - but then that keeps the midges away.
I do think that some people think that anything North of London is too cold and at the moment they wouldn't be far wrong. . . .
It sounds like a lovely part of the world. I like the sound of the fish too.
Seeing as how I am such a dreadful traveller .(.imagine a child being car sick and multiply that by 100!!)we have decided to search this island we live on....never having been to Dorset we are heading that way this year but next year we have seriously got to start on the East coast...only 1 trip for a weekend to Whitby so far!!
It sounds like a lovely part of the world. we often go camping in Edale, Derbyshire. You're right, I have never thought of going over to the East coast. I could be tempted...
I have never heard of cucumber fish, the name conjures up a funny picture. I envy you living by the sea.

Where is Withersea? Is it anywhere near WitherNsea? Perhaps it is one of those lost Holderness villages whose ghostly church bells echo on dark nights across the waves?
ALSO... WARNING! We don't want any of those bloody southerners coming up to East Yorkshire! So keep quiet about our secret world or you will be returned post haste to Gloucestershire!

I used to have a friend who lived in Withernsea. We don't speak anymore.
Spent most of my childhood holidays in a little village on the edge of the North Yorks moors. A great treat was a day out to Filey - it seemed such an expedtion to get there - sandwiches to be made and packed, buckets and spades and bathing costumes found etc. It's a wonder we got there at all. I don't think it ever ever rained either....
How strange - all my holiday guests seem to be from the South West. Roads clogged here too, but apparently empty compared to Devon and Cornwall according to this weeks new arrivals.
